Hello everyone! I wanted to share with you some of my personal rules for sports betting since it will help you on days where I may not be providing you with some of my picks. Some of these may seem obvious to you, but it is always nice to be re-assured of your own sports betting guidelines. You do not have to follow these rules, but please consider them when making your next sports bet!

NEVER BET ON YOUR OWN TEAMS

This is one of the first rules of sports betting. You are already so invested in your team and rooting for them big time to win, so why get your wallet invested too? The last thing you want is your team to lose and you lose money. Now, is it okay to bet something like an over, team total, or player prop? Sure, I do that sometimes. That is fine, you can root for points or a player to do well. Especially (in a world) where you go to the game live in person, definitely bet on something to root for aside from your team winning. I would also stay away from putting your team in a parlay or teaser UNLESS you are 100% sure your team will win/cover. For example: my Ravens were at once (+1) against the Colts this past season, so I took advantage of a teaser to bring us to (+7) because no way we were losing (if at all) by that much to Phil Rivers. Once again, you are already so invested in your team to win the game, why add more anxiety and frustration if it isn’t going well?

2. NEVER TEASE OVER THE ZERO

I know what you are thinking. “There’s NO WAY the Packers lose after teasing from (-3) to (+3).” Yeah, I have been there many times too, and 9 times out of 10, they lose and the teaser fails. That’s the point of teasers, they are supposed to look really good. The best way to approach teasers, in my eyes, is to bring teams from (-8) to (-2) or (+8) to (+14), however many points it is for the respective sports you are betting. It’s like buying free points since they payouts for teasers are really good. Over/Unders are also something for teasers, which I will do from time to time, but the point differences are more of a factor in the spreads than the over or under.

3. LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO BET THE UNDER

Speaking of Over/Unders, it is rare that you will find me betting an under. Why? Because who wants to root for no scoring? Why would anyone go into watching a game and think “Let’s have a 13-10 defensive battle!”? Especially since we are not betting on our own teams, who cares? Let’s see the 45-40 shootout with insane stats (especially for fantasy purposes too), let’s see two basketball teams make almost every shot and see a 135-130 OT thriller, let’s see homerun after homerun, goal after goal. But make sure when you do bet an over, it is justified. Do your research, and make sure it is valid. You have seen my posts, you know I provide you with some stats on their recent scoring. I will bet an under, on occasion, if the line seems wrong or weird to me. For example: a few weeks ago, I saw the Oilers and Maple Leafs at 6.5 goals. In their 5 previous games, there were less than 6 goals in all of them. As soon as I put it in, it went to 6 goals and the game was 4-2, so thank god I had that extra half goal.

4. DEFEND YOUR BET UNTIL IT HAS OFFICIALLY WON OR LOST

This one is a bit of a fun one. When you place a bet, support it and defend with all the stats that made you place the bet. Then, no matter how bad it is during the game, defend your bet. “All we need is for them to score a td, get the two point, recover the onside kick, and complete the hail mary.” Or “Okay, just need to make this three, have them miss the free throws, make another three, steal the ball and score again.” Is what you should be saying even in the final seconds going into a loss. Always believe, because once in a blue moon, it will happen, and you will be so joyous for hitting that one bet.

5. KNOW YOUR LIMITS

This is probably the most important rule for any sort of sports betting, gambling, etc. out there: KNOW YOUR LIMITS. You got to know when to stop. Never be that person you see in TV shows or movies who’s down $50K (especially if it’s to Tony Soprano) because they just could not stop playing and losing. Now, everyone is differently financially and every budget for things like this is different, but just know when to stop. Always have a point where you stop (down $50, $500, $5,000, etc.) and STOP until it is paid out. If you are right around there, I will allow a “Hail Mary Parlay” as I call it where you put together 6-8 legs of a parlay to win it all back, but if (more so, when) it loses, STOP. Also, do not hesitate to call 1-800-GAMBLER if you think you have a gambling problem, or if one might be forming. I know my posts are fun, and I try to be fun, but this is something that I take seriously. If you don’t want to call, but need to talk to someone, my DMs are always open!

These five rules are just some of the rules I follow when placing my sports bets, and hope you follow some, if not all, of these as well. We are all here to win together, but we also will lose together from time to time. Even some of the sports betting experts lose, so also consider that. If you enjoyed this, let us know in the comments! I am more than happy to provide another post with some other rules. Happy Betting!
